Southwest Ambulance works with area hospitals and care facilities to coordinate special "home for the holidays" or "special event" transports. Designed for stable patients who otherwise could not go home to attend holiday gatherings, Southwest Ambulance has taken patients of all ages home for a few hours to spend Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Passover with family members. Southwest Ambulance has also transported children for a special day out of the hospital to Spring Training baseball games, the Circus, and Concerts. The transports are done at no cost to the patient or family, and the ambulance crew remains with the patient the entire time to ensure the patient is safe and comfortable.

Coordinating these special transports with the originating facility, family members and special event locations can be challenging, but extremely rewarding to all involved. One of the more exciting stories related to a special transport was of a child taken to a Spring Training game to meet some players on the field. During the transport, he received a call that a kidney donor was identified. After the game we took him back to the hospital for final test and to prep for his surgery.
